Wednesday, February 02, 2005 Back in Vermont, waking up early, my body still on European time. Temperature outside the dining room window at 6:30 a.m.: -6 fahrenheit. No wind, air still and cold, moonlight giving way to sunrise. Am back here in part to take care of matters related to the person who's been taking care of the house. There have been a steady stream of indications that it wasn't going well, beginning immediately after my arrival in Madrid. Being back here in 3-D has confirmed the not-going-wellness by way of an impressive display of what can happen when an individual is simply not up to a job. It could have been far, far worse, I remind myself -- the person might have been serious trouble instead of a good soul without a clue. There might have been real damage instead of the long string of mostly small issues. As it is, this will pass, I'll find someone more capable, life will go sweetly on. Monday night -- to bed at 11, a reasonable hour (for me, Madrid version). Woke up shortly after 2:30, made the hike to the bathroom to dump the ballast. Retreated to bed, sank slowly back to sleep. At 3:15, the alarm woke me -- the kind that gets more insistent as you try to ignore it. Heard myself saying, "Okay, okay, okay" out loud as I fumbled the light on and tried to grab the clock before it got so obnoxiou that I burst into barely-awake tears. Stifled that racket, sometime later found myself carrying three bags down the stairs. Three heavy bags, one of them my monster wheeled duffel (henceforth called 'the body bag'). Me: a beast of burden. Stepped out into the street to the sound of laughter. Looked around, found no one in view, began hauling my gear the block and a half toward the nearest main drag. A 20-something male and female, the source of the hilarity, moved into view across the first intersection. Making merry, arms around each other they crossed ahead of me, cutting a glance my way then immediately forgetting all about me, going their wee-hours way. Another male wandered by after them, regarding me blankly, saying nothing. I continued on. [continued in next entry] ************* Early morning sunlight on windowshades, northern Vermont:
